This year BEATS have started a new partnership with YASERA, a charity working in 4 areas of Indonesia, helping to improve the position of impoverished, disaster-affected people by addressing the root causes of their vulnerability. YASERA does this by educating families about key health messages to alleviate malnutrition, campaigning against child marriage, and educating families about organic farming, financial management and business development.
BEATS are providing funds to enable YASERA to train vulnerable families over an 18 month period to raise awareness of the need for disaster preparedness and risk management.
YASERA's team (see photo) have just completed their 1st stage of PADR (Participatory Assessment of Disaster Risk) training. Following this, the team will be trained in PRA (Participatory Rural Assessment). They will then go to the Regency (district) of Karangasem in Bali, which is close to the active volcano Mt. Agung, to help the villagers assess the major hazards, risks and resources in the area.
YACAN Children's Home, Deli Tua, Medan, Indonesia, is a Christian home, currently housing approximately 50 children. The home is purpose built, and includes a hydroponics project and areas to grow fruit and food in order to be as self sufficient as possible.
Two of the students at YACAN Children's Home, Apernus and Odina, have graduated in Business Management this year. They will now stay at YACAN for a year supporting the staff; Apernus will be in charge of the younger boys and the hydroponics project, Odina will be in charge of the younger girls and assist with finance records.
YASAH Children's Home is located on the outskirts of Medan, Sumatra and is home to approximately 120 children. It has its' own school (known locally at Anastasia School), which provides education for these children as well as about 200 children from the surrounding area. BEATS has been providing funds towards teachers' salaries to enable the school to give all these children a good start to life.
